چکیده

In this demo paper we describe the natural language generation component of an electronic textbook application, called Inquire1. Inquire interacts with a knowledge base which encodes information from a biology textbook. The application includes a question-understanding module which allows students to ask questions about the contents of the book, and a questionanswering module which retrieves the corresponding answer from the knowledge base. The task of the natural language generation module is to present specific parts of the answer in English. Our current generation pipeline handles inputs that describe the biological functions of entities, the steps of biological processes, and the spatial relations between parts of entities. Our ultimate goal is to generate paragraphlength texts from arbitrary paths in the knowledge base. We describe here the natural language generation pipeline and demonstrate the inputs and generated texts. In the demo presentation we will show the textbook application and the knowledge base authoring environment, and provide an opportunity to interact with the system.

User-Controlled, Robust Natural Language Generation from an Evolving Knowledge Base

In this paper we describe a natural language generation system which produces complex sentences from a biology knowledge base. The NLG system allows domain experts to discover errors in the knowledge base and generates certain parts of answers in response to users’ questions in an e-textbook application. The system allows domain experts to customise its lexical resources and to set parameters w...

ing challenge. In a typical advanced high school or introductory college biology course, a student is expected to learn about 5000 concepts and several hundred thousand new relationships among them.1 Science textbooks are difficult to read and yet there are few alternative resources for study. Despite the great need for science graduates, too few students are willing to study science and many d...

Developing a Textbook Evaluation Scheme for the Expanding Circle

Among the four important factors in the educational contexts, namely, teachers, learners, textbooks and contexts, textbooks play an important role in English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom where it provides the primary source of linguistic input. The wealth of published material for English language teaching (ELT) available in the mark...

Dynamic Product Interfaces: A Key Element for Ambient Shopping Environments

By embedding information technologies into tangible products a new class of products is created that we call smart products. Smart products use product information in product-centered communication with users. Communication of smart products is handled by dynamic product interfaces. We present a model for QA-based dynamic product interfaces and its implementation DyPI. It is based on a schema-d...

Representing States in a Biology Textbook

Representing biology textbook knowledge involves handling numerous concepts that have multiple possible states, for example, developmental states such as embryo, juvenile and larva; system states such as homeostasis and equilibrium; states of chromosomes such as chromatin, nicked, etc. Though substantial research exists on formalisms for representing states, relatively less work exists on ontol...
